Planting a Legacy has been awarded its third grant in three years. Jennifer Lang, an expressive therapist at BJC Hospice and the designer of the program, explains, “Flowers represent growth and life and provide rich symbolism in burying seeds and watching new life emerge.” This mirrors the grief process of saying goodbye to a loved one, yet allowing their spirit and memories to live on in the hearts of those who loved them.

Through this project, patients and family members are offered the opportunity to decorate a flower pot with words, quotes, verses, poems, symbols, and imagery, then plant seeds of remembrance to create a beautiful legacy piece. Planting a Legacy is offered to patients and family members at BJC Hospice’s Evelyn’s Hospice House, families referred to BJC Hospice’s Wings on Wheels program, and at retreats and camps.

On behalf of all the patients and families who benefit from the program, Jennifer expresses her deep appreciation and thanks.
